Open Die Forging

At Ferrous Forgings our highly trained and qualified team are able to produce precision sized forgings on the various machines i.e. steam and drop hammers to 6 Ton capacity and open die forging presses to 5000 Ton capacity.

Closed Die Forging

Closed die forging is the process whereby a billet is cut into a desired length to fill a precut die profile of a desired shape and then heated until it reaches optimal temperatures. Once heated the metal is placed between the two halves of the die and then forged together so that the heated metal takes the desired configuration. The die fully encloses the shaped metal.
Ferrous Forgings use both hammers and presses to produce these forgings.

Rough Machining

Rough machining is the process of removing the excess material to shape it for clients to finish machine. It also removes surface scale to enable ultrasonic or magnetic particle testing of the forgings.

Ferrous Forgings offer full in house capacity for rough machining on their range of seven vertical borers which can handle jobs with up to 12 feet (3600mm) outside diameter.

Straightening & Testing

Ferrous Forgings offer a straightening and pressing service to clients whereby they can bring in a product that is bent, buckled etc for correcting.

Ferrous Forgings can arrange NATA testing including Mechanical Testing, Chemical Analysis, Ultrasonic Testing and Metallurgical Examination of finished product if required

Sawing

Ferrous Forgings have a range of bandsaws on site with various capabilities up to a cutting capacity of 1300mm and accordingly offer contract cutting services.

Sawing capabilities include:

  • Amada HA 400 bandsaw with angle cutting facilities
  • Katso automatic bandsaw with cutting capabilities up to 520mm diameter
  • Amada automatic bandsaw with cutting capabilities of up to 1080mm diameter
  • Everising H-1300 Bandsaw with cutting capabilities up to 1300mm round or square

Milling

In the machining department, Ferrous Forgings have equipment capable of providing an efficient/faster method of machining called Milling.  Milling is the process of trimming down a piece of steel by feeding it past a rotating multiple tooth cutter.

Heat Treatment

Ferrous Forgings offer a normalising and/or annealing heat treatment service with the capacity to treat material up to 14 feet long and up to 10 Ton in weight. All furnaces used for heat treatment are computer controlled and NATA calibrated.

Seamless Ring Rolling

Ferrous Forgings have the capability to produce seamless forged rings on the radial/axial ring  roller machine i.e. we can roll both the outside and inside diameters simultaneously as well as the 2 side faces which result in the finished forging being not only perfectly symmetrical with the outside diameter and bore running truly but also flat on the two top and bottom faces. Contour shapes can be rolled into either the outside or inside faces if required.

Ferrous Forgings have a radial/axial ring roller which can roll rings up to 1600mm outside diameter by 330mm face height.  For rings bigger than these, Ferrous Forgings can forge them out under one of our 5000Ton presses to 2100mm outside diameter by 1000mm face width.

Trepanning

Trepanning is the process whereby a circular cutting tool is used to core out hollow sections as required. Ferrous Forgings do vertical trepan boring of holes in sizes of 4.5 inches (115mm) through to 21 inches (530mm) diameter over a length of 30 inches (750mm).  This service is extremely useful when you are trying to source a heavy wall hollow bar. Using this methodology Ferrous Forgings forge a bar to the desired diameter and then trepan the most suitable sized hole, leaving you with either a thin wall or heavy thick wall thickness in any material you require.
